I didn’t mention the exact range that Lucid Air promised when I drove from Berkeley to Nevada City. All I know is that the distance between the two cities was at least twice the 140 miles. I could theoretically drive all the way to Lake Tahoe on a single charge.

That much range, however, compared to what the Fiat is capable of, can make me a little self-conscious. Driving the Lucid Air is really its sweet spot; the car just destroys the distance. It’s like you pick a spot on the side of the road, think “I’d like to go there” and practically teleport.

The suspension is so smooth, the shape of the car so aerodynamic, the acceleration so easy and quiet, that you might not trust the 90 mph that suddenly and improbably appears in the middle of the dashboard screen. Wow!

This is true even when accelerating on hills. Lucid Air likes to speed them up more than accelerate. It cannot be satisfied. “Call it a mountain?” The EV seemed to ask early and often, even on the steepest Bay Area road. “I barely felt it. Come on, give me a real challenge.”

From the mountain. It’s a 2,300 foot climb to Nevada City. Was it my intrepid mountain that caused the approximate range to plummet, or was it the 35 degree temperature that day that stuck in the battery?

Fortunately, I was able to borrow a cup of electricity from friends who live in a former gold rush town. And a cup seems like the right measurement to use here. When I plugged in a regular electric charger in their garage, the car told me it would take 177 hours to charge a full battery this way. Don’t worry Luc, just drink what you can.

Days after launching its most expensive model yet, the $249,000 Air Sapphire, Lucid also announced the launch of the base Air Pure RWD.

Available with a starting price of $78,900 (including a $1,500 destination charge), the Lucid Air Pure RWD is the only single-engine model in the Air lineup with a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 430 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft. – Leg torque.

That’s enough power to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 124 mph. The electric motor is powered by an 88-kilowatt-hour long-range battery that gives the standard 19-inch wheels an EPA-estimated range of up to 410 miles.

Why I Reserved A Lucid Air
