At least for now, there’s still room for some old-school V8s in the model range.
For a car like this, the Maserati Quattroporte still comes in Trofeo version, with a powerful twin-turbocharged V8 engine. But as the car inevitably reaches the end of its life, is there any solution to the madness?
Does this Quattroporte with its retro setup give you something you can’t find anywhere else? When it costs over £150,000 and you have alternatives like the M8 Gran Coupe or the V8-powered Mercedes-AMG S63, challenging your own times is a necessity.
Maserati Quattroporte Price And Specs
Maserati has its own identity when it comes to styling, and the Quattroporte is the perfect combination of flair and style. It makes it proud of its contemporaries without seeming too weird. The low bonnet conceals the massive V8 engine underneath, but the rest of the exterior flows smoothly from front to rear—with barely a straight edge in sight.
However, there are considerable differences in design philosophies at both ends. The front is smooth but aggressive. Everything is angled towards the Maserati badge in the center of the grille, and three side air intakes painted in red indicate that this is a Trofeo model. The rear, meanwhile, is less interesting, giving off a more standard, boxy sedan look.
There’s only one place to start: the engine. Trofeo models are equipped with a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 580 hp (427 kW) and 720 Nm (538 lb-ft) of torque. The overall performance isn’t too shocking. It accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 203 mph. All told, the Quattroporte is much slower than the M8 Gran Coupe, which accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds, but there’s plenty of performance to be had here. Peak torque is readily available at just 2,250 rpm, so revving up in almost any gear is no problem.
Still, you get the sense that this is a car you don’t mind driving fast. The engine note is harsh and raw, barely penetrating the insulated cabin, so any temptation to pedal harder is quickly gone, and instead you’re lulled into a realm of comfort and luxury that almost masks everything else. Carter’s Porter. The overwhelming feeling while driving means you want to enjoy the ride.
Performance Sport Exhaust For Maserati Quattroporte
With a tippy weight of over two tons, it’s far from a hate machine, but the wood is engineered to mask any feeling of heft. The ride is pillowy smooth, but it’s followed by a clunky feeling that digs into walls and bumps, taking an extra second to settle down on particularly hard bumps. It’s worth experimenting with the drive settings here, as “Normal” mode feels more compliant. Switching to Sport mode delivers a better balance of ride and engagement, with firmer suspension and quicker steering that reduces car deceleration without compromising comfort.
Much of this comfort is provided by a truly impressive interior. As with the engine, there are some Jurassic elements, such as the extensive use of leather – interestingly enough, we’ve quickly become accustomed to the widespread use of more sustainable materials. If you can look past that, you’ll find this to be a stunning display of style and substance.
It’s packed with details, with woven leather on the seats and dashboard, a clock face centered on the 8.4-inch touchscreen, and a carbon fiber finish on the center console. You won’t find anything cheap here, everything you touch has a high quality feel.
Since this is a large sedan that leans more toward the luxury market, you’d expect there to be plenty of space for passengers, and there is. No matter where you sit, there’s plenty of head and legroom, and three-zone climate control ensures comfort throughout. Boot space is around 530 liters, but it’s shallow and not very useful if you’re moving large bags.
Maserati Launches Fastest Ever Saloons
The Maserati Quattroporte is only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s smooth, feels well-tuned, and has variable gear ratios that you can choose yourself or let the car choose for you based on upcoming road conditions.
In terms of infotainment, the on-board software is very basic. The touchscreen is responsive and clear, but functionality is limited to simple settings adjustments and satellite navigation. It’s interesting because on one hand you expect more for the price, but the lack of complexity and need to spend hours on the endless menu was refreshing.
Of course, the Quattroporte comes with a long list of technology, including a driver assistance package, adaptive cruise control and a rearview camera.
As far as cars go, the Maserati Quattroporte is a confusing concept. Based purely on how you drive it, it’s better than alternatives from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. The difference here is minimal and not enough to justify the astronomical price tag. Feature list
