My first few hours behind the wheel were on the unimpeded Interstate 5 north of Santa Clarita, and the Flying Spur Hybrid was the perfect companion for the duration of the cruise. As expected, the quiet cabin and supportive seats didn’t make me feel tired, and the infotainment system – sourced from Audi but dressed in Bentley duds – was simple and easy to operate. Almost every aspect of my tester’s cabin was wrapped in rich-feeling Imperial Blue leather, real aluminum or an attractive perforated walnut finish, with signature Bentley accents like organ vents and knurled knobs.

With plenty of room for four people, there are few complaints about the cabin experience. While the Flying Spur Hybrid does a good job of hiding its Audi software on the 12.3-inch central touchscreen, the menu and map views of the similarly sized digital instrument cluster are similar to those of the much cheaper A8 sedan. The analog gauge readings certainly seem to fit the price, with intricate details reminiscent of fine watches. Finally, a taller driver’s elbow hits a funny edge on the B-pillar, although the padded surface takes a lot of dents.

During all that highway driving, the hybrid E-mode setting turned the engine on and off imperceptibly, with no start-up vibration. For example, when the steep grades of Grapevine Mountain Pass begin to overwhelm the electric motor, the motor kicks in and goes to work immediately, keeping the Flying Spur moving at speed without delay or drama. When the drive selector (aside from the E Mode selector, mind you) is set to the stiff, aggressive Sport mode, the adaptive dampers smoke signs of body roll – even at the expense of a smooth ride. In that sense, I prefer the more balanced Bentley mode, which maintains a near-perfect ride while still sharpening body movements. The Hybrid’s standard four-wheel steering improves maneuverability in tight corners and stability at high speeds.

Pizza-sized brake discs measuring 16.5 inches at the front and 15.0 inches at the rear are more than enough to slow the Flying Spur Hybrid down with a transmission willing to hold down gears for slip-sensing reasons. The steering wheel itself is mostly numb to road feedback, but that didn’t stop me from pushing the sedan bigger than the owner is used to. I also suspect that my driving is nowhere near the actual limits of the Flying Spur Hybrid. That said, minor cracks start to form in the sedan’s elegant facade during hot driving.

The first is small. Bentley has a high seating position, which improves comfort and long-distance visibility, but aggravates body movements when driving fast. The second is more worrisome, because of the special position of the Flying Spur. The 2.9-liter V6 lets out a roar under the hood at full throttle, a sound that might be masked by the rich exhaust note in the other product it appears in—the non-hybrid Porsche Macan Turbo. Such sonic emissions wouldn’t be out of place in a Bentley, but we’re left with only noise under the hood (and a little vibration in the cabin).

Other than that minor annoyance, the 2022 Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid does an excellent job of incorporating electric current into the brand’s high-speed touring image. The electric motor provides enough power on its own to allow the large sedan to float quietly through the city, and on the highway, the electric system management software perfectly integrates with the turbo V6 when necessary.
